A Record Store Weekend Raid

If you consider yourself a music fan, you’re likely aware that April 21 was Record Store Day – one of the most wonderful days on the year where humankind celebrates the beauty of vinyl and the independently owned brick and mortar record stores that are still in existence. Don’t get me wrong: I love the ease and convenience of streaming services like Spotify and Rdio just as much as the next music listener, but I still stand by the idea that nothing beats a good old fashioned peruse of dusty vinyl on a Saturday afternoon.

Behold, evidence of our vinyl addiction.

Admittedly, I wasn’t able to get out to a store on the 21st, but during a weekend trip to Montreal, my audiophile boyfriend and I did some serious, serious damage and more than made up for it. (Click image to enlarge).

What you see there, dear friends, is the nearly 30 records purchased between the two of us. Some . . . → Read more

Nerding out at SXSW: Watching Trends in Tech and Music

Hopefully everyone who follows Sonicbids knows that we support tons of bands each year at SXSW. For the past few years, I’ve been paying very close attention to the Interactive portion of the festival, where hundreds of new and interesting startups debut or promote their products to the technology and music communities.

As the Product Manager for Sonicbids’ core platform, I’m insanely excited to see the new trends and technology coming out of SXSW’s interactive panels and events. Here’s a short recap of some of the trends and key points I’ve seen, some of which you’ll start to see on Sonicbids:

  • Social discovery is the next big thing. Social discovery encompasses the idea of getting on-the-fly recommendations for new things based on your location, such as restaurants, clubs and even people. Social discovery is a fairly new innovation – only a few apps focus on people discovery (Glancee and Highlight), and there will always be concerns about privacy. Nonetheless, there’s no doubt that social discovery will . . . → Read more

Hello Austin – SXSW 2012 Day 1

We’re here! On Sunday a bunch of us trekked down through turbulent skies to the epicenter of all things music and tech this week, SXSW. With banners and a weeks worth of luggage, we are ready to make this year rock. To prove it, we started the week off with a bang or should I say, a panel.

Yesterday our ceo Panos moderated a panel about Social Music Marketing with panelists from JanSport, Renaissance Hotels, HIP Digital and Deviant Ventures. The panelists talked about aligning their brands or the brands they work with and music. The key takeaway? Bands are an ideal way to reach loyal fans and brand ambassadors but it’s important for connections between brands and bands to feel authentic.

For all the details, check out this piece about the panel from Billboard. More from SXSW soon!

SXSW: Sh*t Sonicbids Gives Away

With SXSW starting this week, plenty of eyes, ears and tweets are buzzing about Austin. One that caught our eye comes from The Spinto Band. These boys put together a hilarious “Sh*t people at SXSW don’t say” video covering all the essentials – sound guys, long lines and party RSVPs (by the way, have you RSVPed yet?).

We even got a shout out in the video so we decided to respond back. Don’t love our XL tshirts? We’ve got something better for you this year:

But in all seriousness, SXSW is only partially about the free swag. Be sure to check out The Spinto Band and all the amazing talent between your free beer and bathroom lines.

Getting Tasty: My top 7 favorite places to grab grub during SXSW

Over the next several weeks, you’ll be hearing us talk a lot about some Tasty music at SXSW. In fact, stay tuned here early next week, when we let you know how you yourself can become a bona fied Tastemaker. In the meantime, we’re wetting our palates by talking about the next best thing to music… of course I mean food, people. Get your mind out of the gutter! Here are some of my tasty picks from my SXSW adventures over the past few years.

Iron Works BBQ: http://www.ironworksbbq.com/

Apologies to my non-meateater friends, this one is definitely not for you. (Actually, considering that I’m talking about food in Texas, this entire blog likely won’t be of much interest to you.) But my fellow carnivores, rejoice! Iron Works is one of the most joyous BBQ experiences you will have while in Austin. You’ll likely find a line halfway down the block in order to get into this place, but don’t be discouraged. With the cafeteria-style service, . . . → Read more
