Music Rights 101: How Musicians Get Paid [Infographic]

Posted by Lisa Occhino on Jul 25, 2014 09:30 AM

Between labels, performing rights organizations, publishers, venues, syncs, and radio, it can get a little (okay, very) confusing for musicians to understand where the flow of money is coming from and how exactly they get paid for their work. Fortunately, The Current published a super helpful infographic to help demystify the process.

"This infographic, designed by Leah Garaas, depicts the basic relationships among artists, audiences, and the organizations and venues that make music available to the masses," explains the author of the article, Jay Gabler. "This is of course only a simplified representation – there are any number of intermediary organizations that we couldn’t include without creating a graphic the size of Wyoming – but it gives you a sense of the basic players in the music production and distribution game today."

You can download a PDF of this infographic and get a detailed walkthrough of it on The Current.
