What Your Music Preferences Say About Your Personality [Infographic]

In a massive study with over 36,000 participants from around the world, a researcher at Heriot-Watt University in Scotland has found that strong personality attributes are linked to our choices in music. Volunteers were asked to rate how much they liked 104 musical styles, and then completed a test that focused on five aspects of personality.

The infographic below shows a visual representation of the results, with traits such as self-esteem, creativity, outgoing, and hard-working placed at different points around the circle. The closer the shaded area is to the outer circle, the higher participants scored on that aspect of personality. So for example, the study found that pop fans tend to be extremely outgoing, while jazz cats and classical listeners score high on self-esteem. Interestingly, people who enjoyed listening to punk, heavy metal, classical, indie, folk, dance, and jazz were all revealed as being creative types – an area where pop fans fell short and rap fans had no correlation either way.
