When you're with your band members, you're usually discussing band-related topics such as rehearsal times, shows, and songs. Surprisingly, the crucial act of bonding with your band is often overlooked. Spending time with your bandmates outside of musical settings is important for creating lasting working relationships, but also for improving your friendships with one another. Here are six ideas on how to bond with your band that don't take place at rehearsal.

1. Go out for coffee

Get away from the practice space and grab a coffee (or tea, if you prefer). Discussing how things are going in your personal lives is one of the best ways to bond. If you're not incredibly close yet, this is a great opportunity to get to know each other a bit better. Grabbing coffee can be quick outing or a longer time commitment depending on your schedule.

2. Have a movie night

Going to a movie theater is generally on the expensive side and doesn't leave much room for actual conversation. Instead, round up some of your and your bandmates' favorite movies. Pair with snacks and drinks for a fun night. You'll be able to pause the movie if you want, so conversation is more convenient.

3. A band family dinner or brunch

Planning a get-together with your band by hosting a dinner or weekend brunch is the perfect opportunity to get the whole group together. If you have a knack for cooking, others always appreciate a good meal! Another idea is to go potluck style and have each band member bring a contribution, i.e. his or her signature dish.

4. Play a sport

Being active isn't just healthy for our bodies, it's also great for our minds. Bonding with your band members over a game of basketball, soccer, football, or frisbee is fun and healthy. If sports aren't your thing, you can offer to be a referee or choose something more relaxing, such as yoga, hiking, swimming, or biking.

5. Band camping trip

Ah, the greatest test of friendship. Regardless of your level of hiking experience, there are camping options for everyone. Depending on the time of year and your area, there are likely gorgeous trails and sites to be found. If you're one of the few that prefer car-camping, that's awesome too! Pack the drinks, s'mores, and snacks, and it'll be an experience that's sure to tighten your bond.

6. Go record shopping

Okay, so this one is still music-related, but record shopping is always fun and a great activity to do with your band. You can get to know their musical tastes better and maybe even get some ideas for possible cover songs.
