I love the Boston music scene for two reasons: it’s got some fantastic bands, and it welcomes newcomers with open arms.
That’s exactly what happened three weeks ago when MegaRex, an energetic pop-punk 3-piece from Brazil, arrived at the legendary Harper’s Ferry. This is the band that won a $4k tour sponsorship in our SonicSX Contest, and you could tell their excitement instantly. I met with them before the show – lead singer/bassist Flavio could not stop talking about how welcoming each band was that night, and how much fun and interesting he found our city.
The show itself was excellent, especially for a Monday night. Local newcomers Cinnamon Fuzz opened with an explosive batch of synth-heavy dance rock. This is a band I’m excited to see take off, and they have the chops to do it. MegaRex was next, and put on an energetic set with hilarious visuals, awesome vocal harmonies and a dueling drum solo.
Next up were local favorites Gentlemen Hall. This was when the show truly became a dance party, thanks to this 6-piece’s funky-as-hell pop jams. These guys recently won a local VMA for Best Breakout Boston Band, and have been breaking into the college scene with flying colors. Closing the show with a bang was The Indobox, another Boston favorite. These guys know how to jam with energy, keeping the dance theme of the night going – I felt like I had teleported from Harper’s into the middle of a rave.

My review: an awesome night with some new, exciting bands. Special thanks to Ryan’s Smashing Life for helping us promote the show, and of course each band and fan who came by to share the love.
