As artists, you all know how hard it can be to manage and collect royalties for your publishing or licensing. This is why we recommend to all artists to join a performing rights organization, specifically our amazing partner BMI. So what does BMI do?
It collects license fees on behalf of its songwriters, composers and music publishers and distributes them as royalties to those members whose works have been performed.
They track your royalties by entering work registrations into its databases from one of two sources: a BMI song registration form provided either electronically or on paper, or a cue sheet which details all music written specifically for a film or television show, or other audio-visual work, typically prepared by the production company.
In BMI’s continuing efforts to ensure that songwriters performing in live music venues receive royalties at every stage of their careers, BMI has launched BMI Live, a program enabling songwriters to register their concerts and set lists online to be considered for payment. To qualify, songwriters need to register their live musical performances on BMI.com/live. Updates on the program are available on the BMI Live page.
