We were going to tell you about Jango Airplay and all the benefits for independent artists ourselves but thought that an objective viewpoint from someone not officially affiliated with Jango would be much more meaningful. The duties have been passed off to Brian Hazard, editor of the ‘Passive Promotion’ blog and creative mind behind Color Theory, Brian’s musical project that he promotes with Airplay. Brian has done in-depth research on Jango Airplay for ‘Passive Promotion’ and has become quite an authority. So without further adieu, here’s Brian.

Jango Airplay plays your music alongside big name acts of your choosing on internet radio site Jango.com, boasting 7 million listeners. Over the past year and a half, my band Color Theory has been played nearly 100,000 times to fans of Depeche Mode, The Postal Service, and Owl City. Dozens of Jango listeners bought albums, friended me on Facebook, and followed me on Twitter. In other words, Jango listeners are real people who may become real fans.
You’re provided an obsessive level of control over who hears your music, choosing what artists to target, in what genre, and what countries and states to focus on. You can take it even further with premium targeting, which allows you to select gender and age group, limiting plays to the geographical areas you select. Choose your targets well, because if listeners are receptive to your music, you can win bonus plays every week.
There are several ways to keep in touch with your new fans on Jango, but the easiest is using the “mass email” feature to send a message to their Jango inbox. Also, any time someone chooses to share their email address with me, I immediately add them to my opt-in mailing list. I’ve collected over a hundred email addresses in the six months since Jango added the feature.
Between a traditional radio campaign and Jango, there’s no contest. It’s the best passive promotion that I know of. Several packages are available, ranging from 250 plays/month, all the way up to 40,000 plays per month. 1,000 plays typically gives you 30-50 new fans that you can stay in contact with.
