Brit & the Cavalry is a Brooklyn-based band with a knack for fusing genres and styles. Lead by Brit Boras (vocals, guitar, violin), the group has been called everything from “psychedelic” to “rootsy” to “ballsy.” And with a serene beauty and a kick of distortion, those words are quite accurate. They walk the thin line of hard and soft in a world of music where most have to choose a side. Recently, we had the chance to talk with Brit about social media, the next big gig, and her love of fog machines.
When/How did you first start playing music?
Brit & the Cavalry started playing together about 2 years ago. Since then we've slowly grown and molded into what we are today.
What's the best gig you ever played?
That’s hard to say, but if I had to choose, I'd say the last gig we played at Bowery Poetry Club in NYC. We got to use another bands fog machine, and I have to say, the feeling of playing guitar through a fog machine somehow instantly makes you feel like your in some wild 80's music video! Full of long hair and wind machines. Needless to say, I was very pumped about the fog machine.
How has social media effected the way you market/promote your music?
The internet alone has been my saving grace when it comes to getting music heard. Social sites like Facebook and Twitter are extremely helpful when promoting shows and new releases. People can find you on the internet and instantly know where and when you are performing, what music you are listening to, and even see photos from a show the night before. I do, however, feel like because the internet is so fast paced, the need for constant updates and posts are crucial to keeping interest, which can sometimes be a difficult task to keep up with.
What's your prediction for the next big advancement in how we find/listen to/share music?
I've noticed a huge jump in the amount of interest bands/musicians get that have great videos online alongside their music. I think that having a really strong music video that will get posted onto blogs, music sites, etc. have a much higher chance of success than a band without.
What's your next big gig coming up? When/Where?
Our record release show for our new EP "Hiker" is at 8pm Friday, October 15th at Pianos in NYC! We will be giving away free CD's, and will be fully equipped with horns, strings, and visuals.
