Sonicbids Artist of the Week: Air Dubai

Written by Marya Mclaughlin | May 2, 2011 01:08 PM
Easier experienced than described, Air Dubai is a bustling seven-piece hailing from the burgeoning music scene of Denver, CO. With disparate musical backgrounds and indiscriminate influences, the boys of Air Dubai have truly created something new: pure, melodic cacophony. We recently had the chance to chat with vocalist, Julian Thomas, about his musical past, opening for OneRepublic, and where you can check Air Dubai out next.

When/How did you first start playing music?

I personally started doing music in my sophomore year of high school. Air Dubai started as a duo between me and our other vocalist, Jon Shockness, when I was just fifteen! Now three years later, it has taken a completely new form with Air Dubai being a full band that has completely exceeded my expectations.

What's the best gig you ever played?

The best gig I ever played was opening for OneRepublic at a brand new arena in Colorado called the 1stBank Center last May. The crowd was huge, about 5,500 people who were all incredibly receptive to our music. It was a blast!

How has social media affected the way you market/promote your music?

I think social media is great. It's really allowed our music to spread to places we would have never thought possible. We have fans from literally all over the world that otherwise would have no idea who we were had it not been for sites like Sonicbids or Facebook or Twitter. Social networking has become an extremely crucial piece of the modern-day music business.

What's your prediction for the next big advancement in how we find/listen to/share music?

I'm still waiting for the day that cell phones, iPods, and computers all morph into one device. So we can discover, download, listen, and talk about music all in one pocket-sized device. And I don't think the idea is very far-fetched, since that's almost basically what an iPhone is. So I wouldn't be surprised if we really saw something like that in the next few years. And a device like that could really take digital music to next level.

What's your next big gig coming up? When/Where?

We just announced a huge hometown show in Denver on May 20th at the Bluebird Theater. It’s our first hometown show since we've been hitting the studio and the road pretty hard, so we're really excited to play for our old fans with brand new material.
