Sonicbids Artist of the Week: Kink Ador

Rarely has a new band ever felt so righteously real. Kink Ador is the offbeat moody child of rock and roll, ecstatic like The Police and freeform like the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Kink Ador has rock for your heart, a tight pulse for your hips, and a brain for the tech savvy DIY artist. We recently caught up with frontwoman Sharon Koltick about the importance of the viral video, how she measures performance success, and where you can see Kink Ador next.

What do you hope listeners will get from your music?

You should listen to Kink Ador if you want something to bring you out of your day-to-day world and engage the brighter, more electric parts of yourself. Rock and roll music should have a kinetic and primal vibe to it, Kink Ador music makes you respond with your body and heart to the world around you. It's funky good time music that will teach you how to love. (Is that ambiguous enough?) Sometimes it's about the way a word rolls off the lips, or about the way a bass note resonates with an entire building, but it is always about learning to tune into yourself and your fellow humans and find compassionate vibrations.

What’s the best gig you ever played?

Dissatisfaction is the curse of all good artists. That being said, I define a good gig as anytime I was able to connect and communicate with my audience. Performing music is such an immediate experience and one that is created for my audience, so you should probably ask them what the best gig was, my point of view is not really important.

What’s your prediction for the next big advancement in how we find/listen to/share music?

I envision a move towards subscriptions services where music is on-demand. I'm optimistic that whatever distribution paths may emerge, that they will support artists' careers. Live shows will still be intensely popular, and I see that live streaming of concerts is a very exciting path for sharing music. Finding good music will still be by word of mouth, good art is "sneezed" through community if it is easily accessible.

What’s your favorite way/tool/site for you to interact with your fans in the digital age? Do you recommend anything to other artists?

Social media has been the greatest gift of this day and age for artists, like I was saying before about creating a "good gig" music is about communication and connection, social media is a fantastic way to do just that! As far as favorites, I love any site that doesn't put too many barriers in my way. I like to be able to search for fans, find out anything they may have shared about themselves or what's going on with them, and share what's important to me with them as well. I like to use what works for my fans, right now that is Facebook, Twitter (great for using on a mobile phone), and YouTube.

Just a tip for Facebook sharing, in the current format it is easier to share videos on Facebook than it is to share music, so artists should really consider putting some kind of static or visual "video" together for all the songs on the albums and put them on your YouTube channel. It makes it so much easier for your fans to share these videos. The bottom line, it's not about how you use new media, it's about how your fans use new media. Get on board!

What’s your next big gig coming up? When/Where?

Kink Ador is doing a month residency with Arlene's Grocery in New York, NY. We play every Saturday night in September - 9/3, 9/10, 9/17, and 9/24. Join us!
