Not too long ago, I checked out Futurehit.DNA and even had the chance to talk to the author, Jay Frank, about it. Based off of extensive research working at Yahoo!, Frank provides 15 ideas or “rules” for artists that are looking to make a hit song in today’s ever changing consumer market. As Frank has said himself, “Music comes from your heart in a natural way that is inexplicable… [but] as I was writing the book, I developed 15 ideas that I saw could be changing over the previous decade…I wanted to know why these changes were made with technology… Technology then dictated an element of the creative process.”
Here are a few bigger takeaways that readers can expect from Futurehit.DNA:
- “Technology dictates music creativity, not the other way around.”
- The first 10 seconds of a song are absolutely critical.
- Technology helping all artists at any level because it’s helping to engage listeners. It widens the scope. But if your first song doesn’t engage them, then you’ve lost the fan.
- There are always exceptions to the rules. But spend time and earn your audiences trust. When you have their trust, then start challenging them.
Sure, not every musician wants to make a "hit" song and reach eternal fame. But, Futurehit.DNA proves to be a valuable resource for any songwriter looking to make their music more accessible and build a bigger audience. Check out my full interview with Jay Frank about Futurehit.DNA here!
