With Reeperbahn submissions coming to a close on June 20th, we wanted to check in with last year’s Sonicbids band to grace the stage – De Staat. We recently caught up with the band to discuss their treacherous trip to Reeperbahn, band camaraderie, and why you should submit for this year’s fest.

Why did you submit to Reeperbahn 2010?

First of all, it was a chance to play in Germany for the first time on a cool festival where the chances are high that you have a good crowd. A crowd that's interested in hearing new stuff too, which is a crowd I love. That's reason enough. Next to that it was a chance to get our music further into the world. If you play your cards right there might be some important people watching you. Also because it's Reeperbahn. Reeperbahn equals fun. So if you're not playing for the above, just come down for the good times.

What did you do to prepare for the festival?

Nothing weird. We try to prepare a set that represents us the best in the short amount of time we have on stage. We try to stick out.

Tell us a bit about your festival experience.

Our Reeperbahn gig was one I'll probably never forget. On the way to Hamburg our van broke down. We had to leave the van with all our backline near the highway, and we got into a friend's car. We only had our guitars with us when we arrived (late) at the venue, but the people were very helpful. The band that was playing after us (Earl Greyhound) lent us their gear. So they basically saved our ass. They did have a weird set up though: our drummer was in an indescribable position playing on their strange drum kit. But it was good clean fun.

Did you meet any influential people there? How has the Reeperbahn Festival influenced your career?

We did meet up with some people who are now working for us I think. It's hard to say if this show was essential for our career or anything, but it definitely didn't do wrong. I think it did a lot of good.

Can you give other artists submitting to the Reeperbahn Festival some advice?

There are a lot of bands playing, so emphasize the unique things about your band. Don’t be the band that doesn't stick.
