Calling themselves “The greatest band from Alabama since "Alabama",” the boys of Bottle Up and Explode sure know how to make an impression. Everyone in the band had a slightly different bible-belt upbringing; Chris Cargile grew up doing normal childhood things like burning piles of books, records and movies with his church, while the Thomas brothers Micah and Caleb grew up home schooled, without TV and hung out with girls who made their own jean skirts. It’s no wonder they all rebelled and ended up in the world of rock ’n’ roll. We recently caught up with guitarist Caleb on how they find new music, the bands best show, and where you can see them next.
When did you decide to make a career/focus of music?
We started playing locally, and then really quickly started selling out the local venues. I think that made us think that there might be something to this.
What’s the best gig you ever played?
There's a tie between 2 shows. 1. We opened up for The Whigs and that was an incredible night. Awesome receptive crowd and they're the tightest band we've ever played with. And 2: We did this last minute house show in a basement that opened into a pretty cool backyard. We literally announced it 2 days before the show. There were over 300 people there, the basement was full, the backyard was full, and people were on the stairs. Everyone was drunk and dancing. Lots of pretty girls.
Back in the day, most people found music on the radio or MTV. Obviously, today there is a plethora of ways to hear about new music. How do you find new bands or artists that you like to listen to?
A big way is actually finding older artists. If you like Keith Richards, you watch a few interviews and find out he liked Chuck Berry, dig a little bit and find out that Chuck Berry was influenced by T-bone Walker and Muddy Waters, etc. You get into stuff MTV never would have talked about even in its heyday. For new music, probably just swapping records with friends or listening to records that friends have made. We’re loving the new Ocean is Theory record.
What’s the most challenging thing about being an emerging artist personally, for you?
Scheduling!
What’s your next big gig coming up? When/Where?
We've got some dates in Atlanta and Nashville over the next month. Looking forward to playing Nashville for the first time!
