Find me on:
American music has been in a post-punk state for years - Max Burgundy is ready to lead the nostalgia parade to the starting line of post-hip hop America. Hailing from the Bronx, the genre’s birthplace - but currently residing in Brooklyn, home to the new arts movement in NYC - who better to do so than someone who has been down since its inception? Raised by a lone wolf of a single mother, petty street violence, John Singleton movies and the only genre he's ever known, Max Burgundy has never stopped paying attention to himself and his surroundings, and it shows. We recently had the chance to chat with Max on his favorite gig, his beef with image, and how to use the internet to your advantage.

When did you decide to make a career/focus of music?

I've been writing music since the age 10, but in earnest I started to make music as a career at the beginning of the year, so about 6 months ago.

What’s the best gig you ever played?

I had a really great gig at Southpaw in Brooklyn last year. The vibe was great. The sound was incredible. That is so key. You know when you sound your best you feel like the crowd is in your palm. Also the venue took great care of us. We had drinks and a place to enjoy them at. The openers Junk Science and Das Racist were all really great dudes to hang with and party with. They brought tons of people so that was dope too.

These days, “image” matters just as much as the music (sometimes even more!) How do you define your own image?

Jesus chic. Son of man swag. That's my look. Everyday I try to look more and more like the most famous religious icon - depending on who you ask - in the world. I practice growing my beard and pretty much trying to look as if I have "hair like wool" and "feet like brass." I think its working. Other than that I hate image and expect the same of my fans.

What’s your favorite way/tool/site for you to interact with your fans in the digital age? Do you recommend anything to other artists?

Facebook is great because or means so much to so many people. But lately I've been in love with Twitter - and Twitter's been loving me. I really like how limited and concise Twitter is. I feel like everyone can sound interesting and compelling in 140 characters or less. Tumblr is great too!

I'd say to all the new artists out there is to find your platform, whatever it is, and stay involved and keep them all as integrated as possible. No one wants to follow someone that doesn't release timely, poignant content.

What’s your next big gig coming up? When/Where?

I have a gig in late June that I'm in the works booking and confirming - I can't announce them yet.  Check my Tumblr and my Twitter @maxburgundy for show announcements.
