Submissions are open for the Eco Arts Awards. The annual competition doles out a $2,000 Grand Prize for songwriting, which is pretty amazing! Several winners from years past have come through Sonicbids. We thought we'd catch up with some past selections.

We caught up with Jeff Crosby who came in 3rd place last year.

Tell Us About The Winning Song:

"We All Know The Words" was written after a childhood friend of mine was killed in the war in Iraq, watching big business move into my small hometown and seeing the effects of the BP oil spill. I was feeling an overwhelming hopelessness from it all and writing lots of different songs that had the same subject matter. Once the dust had settled and I looked back at the sessions, this one really held it's ground for me. The chorus glimmer's with a bit of hope saying:

" We all know the words to this song It's just a matter of getting everyone to sing along"

It's basically saying: We all know what has to change but nothing is going to change until we all demand change together.

How Did The Process Go?

I was listening to lots of John Martyn's "Solid Air", Jacob Dylan's "Women + Country" and assorted Tom Waits records and had a real desire for a song with extremely simple production. Music and melodies that wouldn't compete with the lyrics and allow the listener to really focus on the words. I knew the song was perfect for the Eco-Arts Awards when I read what they were all about and am truly honored that they've selected this tune.

What's Up Next With You?

I have a new E.P. titled "Silent Conversations" that was just released on CSS Records March 5th and will be on tour throughout the U.S. this summer. Hope to see you all out there!
