Find me on:
Boston-based band Static of the Gods has drawn musical comparisons from bands like Metric and Rainer Maria to the Silversun Pickups. After a personally challenging year in 2009, the three friends made up of Jen Johnson (voice, guitar, & keyboard), Mike Latulippe (drums & samples) and Ben Voskeritchian (bass, guitar, & keyboards) decided to make 2010 their year. With two national tours under their belt, the group has earned a reputation for having subtle yet powerful songs, and a magnetic stage show. Static of the Gods is gaining momentum so don’t be surprised to see a lot more of them in the years to come. We had a chance to chat with the band about their best shows, the faith of fans, and more.

When/How did you first start playing music?

All three of us started playing music fairly early on in our lives. Jen's Mom was a classical singer, and she grew up playing violin. Ben and Mike both started playing music in junior high.

What's the best gig you ever played?

We've played a lot of really fun shows, but there are a few that really stand out for different reasons. One is our most recent was at this year's KahBANG! Festival, which was a gig we got through Sonicbids. Getting to play outside on a stage that size in a festival atmosphere was really exciting and challenging, and the organizers were amazing. Once, we played a house party in Texas that was great - local college students started inviting bands on tour to stop by their house and play for an all ages audience. It was total chaos in the best possible way; dancing, clapping, singing along - it was the classic DIY experience. We love playing live and we've been lucky to play at some great venues across the U.S. that have been very supportive of our band.

How has social media effected the way you market/promote your music?

It feels a lot easier to keep in touch and let people know about what you're up to as a band. When people get excited about what you're doing and want to tell others about it via social media, that feels great. Feels less like "selling" and more like "sharing".

What's your prediction for the next big advancement in how we find/listen to/share music?

With the popularity of sites like Kickstarter.com, it seems that more musicians are taking their projects directly to their fans before they record a single note. It's a different kind of model than the one a lot of musicians are used to, which is "here's what we made; take a listen and see if you want to buy it!" When people are willing to put money down before the music is created, it's a true testament to their belief in your creative prowess that they want to hear what you'll do next. We're interested to see where this trend is headed.

What's your next big gig coming up? When/Where?

October has been a busy month for us. We've had a lot of shows. We're currently working on some new material that will be released early next year, so we're taking some time off from shows to work on that. We recently did a show at the Hard Rock Boston, which was really exciting since it was a benefit for http://www.rawkstars.org/.
