Hailing from Stockholm, Sweden, Subfive bonded over their shared experience in jazz music, as well as a flare for genres like folk, funk, soul and more. Since their formation in 1999 they have steadily become one of Scandinavia’s leading jazzfusion acts. The quintet now hopes to take their talent and original sound to the far reaches of the world. We got the chance to chat with keyboardist Mats Bystrom about Subfive and where you can check them out next.

When/How did you first start playing music?

The band was formed in the spring of 1999 at a studio session we all happened to take part in.

What's the best gig you ever played?

That would be jazz festivals in either Germany or Japan, that's when you meet not only music fans, but also fellow musicians to share experience, make connections and have fun!

How has social media effected the way you market/promote your music?

Made it a lot easier, for sure. For example, if we're playing a gig locally here in Stockholm, we could make sure that our entire fan base, in addition to all our colleagues and friends knew about it within a couple of hours through Facebook. That's something that would have been costly and time-consuming only a few years back.

What's your prediction for the next big advancement in how we find/listen to/share music?

I think that a subscription to a huge streaming music library like Spotify is the future. For a modest monthly fee you can find almost anything you're looking for, and it's legal. However, they would have to increase their payout rates to artists in order for it to work long-term.

What's your next big gig coming up? When/Where?

In November, we're going on a two-week tour to Japan. It's our third trip over there, and we're really looking forward to that.
