Love in Stockholm & Re-Up @ the Middle East

This past Saturday, while my boy J the S was rocking Unity Fest along with the rest of Boston, I decided to head to the Middle East instead and catch two of the hardest working bands in town, Love in Stockholm and Re-Up. Do I regret that decision? Not in the slightest. Both of these bands have built up a ton of buzz in Beantown and beyond for their genre-fusing compositions and energetic live performances, and Saturday night was no exception to this.

First up was Love in Stockholm. Equal parts Otis Redding and Ohio Players, I’ve had the pleasure of seeing these guys a number of times before and they never disappoint! LIS blend funk, soul, blues, and rock together which, combined with tight chemistry and stage presence, makes for a show you don’t want to miss! Also, not to draw away from their own music, but these guys have their cover game on lock – they finished their set with a killer rendition of “No Diggity” from BLACKstreet, and you can check out a funked up version of “Fortunate Son” in their EPK. With a few EPs already under their belt, Love in Stockholm are working on new material as we speak, so look out for more to come from these guys.

Re-Up was next on the bill. These guys have accumulated quite a bit of hype over the past few years, playing up and down the east coast (and beyond), and rocking shows with the likes of Gym Class Heroes and the Roots, the latter of which they have a good deal in common with musically. Re-Up is a live hip hop band, complete with a horn section and turntables, that mix a little jazz, pop, and funk into their sound to create laid back, infectious grooves that’ll get any party started. And with 8 members in the band, all jamming and interacting seamlessly with one another, that’s exactly what their set was – one big party.

Long story short, this was a great show! As per usual, both bands killed it, which is reason enough that you shouldn’t pass up seeing them if you have a chance. Thanks to Love in Stockholm and Re-Up for a great time, and to Jess Ica for the photos!
