Recently Montreal has been making waves in the music world, known for breaking Arcade Fire and festivals like Pop Montreal. Well, keep your ears and eyes peeled for another badass rock band out of the area, GIRL. These boys have been at it since 2008 and are proving that Montreal is a haven for great tunes. We chatted with guitarist Louis about their sound and the scene.
Your bio calls your music epic – how do you write such epic tunes?
We all like epic and large things and when we rehearse, it feels natural to do such big music. We consider ourselves more of a live band than anything else, and the main reason why we like to play so big is because we love to be on stage and play it loud.
What’s your favorite part of playing festivals like Canadian Music Week? Do you prefer them over other gigs?
I think that festivals are the best way to expose your music to people. Crowds are more open, and are more likely to discover new bands. By bringing people closer, festivals also allow different styles of music to feel closer. It's all about sharing and discovering.
How would you describe the Montreal music scene?
It's awesome. I think that right now the world has an eye on the Montreal music scene (thanks to Arcade Fire :P) and it's a great opportunity for Montreal artists to expand their music and be proud of what they are part of. It's a small and easy-going city where you can easily meet a lot of talented musicians whose music is a big interest. We got tired of hearing that New York or London as music capitals. If these people can do it, we can make it bigger.
What are you working on these days? Any big gigs coming up?
We did a big gig/party last month in an old disused interior public pool, crazy night. But now, we're working on our first album and for the next two months we'll be working in studio with Jace Lasek (from The Besnard Lakes / Breakglass Studio / Montreal). We got tons of new stuff and we're pretty excited about recording it. Also, we are currently talking with some independent labels who would like to release it. There'll be big things coming up this summer.
And now for the important question: What’s your favorite ice cream flavor?
Humm... Cream & Biscuits is a good one.
