The Nines Festival is this weekend and it’s already amazing lineup got an added boost to it after Air Traffic Controller was selected to join the bill through Sonicbids.
I recently had a chance to talk to members Casey Sullivan, Steve Scott & Dave Munro about all things The Nines and Air Traffic Controller related.

Sonicbids: How did it feel to get selected to be part of such a great lineup at The Nines Festival?
Casey Sullivan: I freaked out a bit when I found out we were chosen to play. I had been reading about it for a little while because Dr. Dog is one of my favorite bands and I still haven't seen them play live. I never imagined the first time I'd see them that we'd be playing at the same festival.
Steve Scott: The moment I heard about this festival I wanted ATC to be on the bill. When we got the call I flipped my lid and put on some Walk Off the Earth to celebrate.
Sonicbids: What can fans at The Nines expect from your set?
Dave Munro: Well we recently established these rules - no getting drunk onstage, no fighting onstage, and no staring at each other inappropriately. Fans can expect us to come dangerously close to breaking all of our new rules.
Sonicbids: How does it feel to have such a great new festival so close to home?
SS: The Nines is a stellar addition to the Boston Summer calendar. It's so great that this festival is near Boston but also accessible to folks north and west of the city. ATC has played a bunch of shows in the past up that way and we've already heard from those fans that they're stoked to come check this festival out. Summertime is the best for playing outside.
CS: It's really exciting to see a new music festival in Massachusetts, especially one that gives local acts like us the opportunity to play with national acts that we admire. As a music fan, it's been amazing to see so many great festivals pop up. There are chances to see some of my favorite bands without even leaving the state.
Sonicbids: Where’s your favorite place to play in Boston?
DM: Brighton Music Hall. We released our album NORDO there with fellow Boston acts - Will Dailey, Friendly People and Nemes Definitely the best Tuesday of my life.
Sonicbids: You guys recently played The Beachcomber in Wellfleet which is one of my favorite places on Earth and a unique venue. Where’s the strangest, most unique venue you’ve ever played?
CS: We played at an airport in New Hampshire a few years ago. It was funny to be playing as people were coming in and out with their luggage. It was a strangely appropriate gig for us to play.
SS: ATC played a show at Wachusett Mountain last winter. I'm not talking about the lodge. I'm talking outside. In the snow. On the mountain. It was brief! (And fun!)
Sonicbids: What’s going on w/ you guys right now and in the near future?
SS: Right now we're working on taking our shows to a wider audience around New England, New York and down the East Coast a bit. We've also been working on a couple of new tunes that we're hoping to start trying out at some shows soon.
