Find me on:
Under one roof in New England's Pioneer Valley, Darlingside came together with five songwriters, a mandolin, a cello and violin, guitars and drums, a chorus of voices, and a van named Chauncey.  Holed up in their home between a cornfield and the Connecticut River, they forged a seamless, exhilarating sound at the intersection of rock, classical, and folk music.  The band is currently rolling out an innovative subscription album, Pilot Machines, and shaking rafters along the eastern seaboard with their vibrant live shows. We recently had the chance to catch up with vocalist/guitarist Don Mitchell on his favorite gig, polling the audience, and where you can see Darlingside next.

What do you hope listeners will get from your music?

Our songs are filled with high peaks and low valleys, and we like to think it offers up a journey for listeners.  We enjoy listening to music that feels great but that also provokes further thought - so that's what we strive to create.

What’s the best gig you ever played?

The Iron Horse in our hometown of Northampton, MA is always a favorite.  Playing the main stage last year at Gathering of the Vibes was a real treat.  Our recent sold-out record release show at Rockwood in New York was a really special night for us.  We consider a late night stop at The Meatball Shop around the corner an integral part of the Rockwood experience.

How has social media affected the way you market/promote your music?

Social media requires us to get into the mindset of the fan.  If I were scrolling through a dense feed of information, what would stand out?  If I were bored and looking for a diversion, what kind of media content would I enjoy?

What’s a creative way that you interact with your fans? Live? Online?

We're releasing our new album Pilot Machines through an online subscription platform.  It's pretty exciting to be consistently getting brand new tracks into people's inboxes.

We've done some amusing trivia series with our followers on Facebook.  At live shows, we'll sometimes run an audience poll as to whether our violin/mandolinist's current mustache is a keeper or not.

What’s your next big gig coming up? When/Where?

Our Blow the House Down 7" release party at Lily Pad in Cambridge, MA on March 4 at 6pm!  tickets.darlingside.com
