When/How did you first start playing music?
My father and mother are musicians. I gravitated towards the piano at a young age and began taking lessons. It was a natural draw for me. I stopped playing for a while but came back to it late in high school. My mom gave me some helpful insight at a young age. She encouraged me to practice because she believed the piano was the best friend I could ever ask for; that it'd always be there and stay true to me. It turns out she was right.
What's the best gig you ever played?
My record release for Is This What You Had In Mind was an amazing experience. It was this past June at Joe's Pub in NYC. A lot of blood and sweat went into the record and was present that night. I had moved to NYC in 2007 and the transitional period was tough for me. A great deal of build up and energy was present. The support was evident and overwhelming. It was amazing to walk on stage and see a creative world and loving community I worked so hard to create. That was definitely my most fulfilling live moment to date.
How has social media effected the way you market/promote your music?
Besides touring, most of my work is online. It's wild to me how important web promotion and media contributes to success. Creating an online community is key for independent artists these days. I try to keep up with new technology and the constant consumer hunger for fresh material but it can be challenging to maintain. There's always something to do; keeps things interesting.
What's your prediction for the next big advancement in how we find/listen
to/share music?
Fans and musicians are returning back to the live scene for inspiration and new material. I don't necessarily think this is an advancement but more of a return to the performance, stage aspect.
What's your next big gig coming up? When/Where?
I have an upcoming winter and spring tour. The spring NYC show at Mercury Lounge on March 10th should be awesome. I'm looking forward to airing new material. Also, on upcoming dates I'll be playing with a songwriter I respect named Dar Williams. I'm definitely looking forward to that. The Vermont show at Higher Ground on Friday, February 25th feels like a good one too.
