When did you decide to make a career/focus of music?
When I collaborated with my uncle who is a musician (Benjamin John) and completed my second song with music and lyrics called "If We Choose to Love.” Seeing his impression of me change in a good way made me realize that I might actually be good at writing songs one day. And when I got accepted to Berklee College of Music, I knew I had to stay focused. Something that I struggled with because you’re surrounded by seriously talented people. I learned many life lessons at Berklee.
What’s the best gig you ever played?
When I was invited by Robert Nalin to play with his band East Street this year at the Esplanade Waterfront Theater in Singapore. It was the first time I was completely free on stage and just had fun.
Back in the day, most people found music on the radio or MTV. Obviously, today there is a plethora of ways to hear about new music. How do you find new bands or artists that you like to listen to?
I have a lot of friends who are musicians and they pass me music they admire and I often get to hear their new music before it is released. I am also a big fan of YouTube because it has allowed me to discover and follow up on many World music artists that are simply Amazing! Artists like Sara Tavares, Oumou Sangare, Angelique Kidjo, Nitin Sawhney, Bukia and many, many more.
What’s the most challenging thing about being an emerging artist personally, for you?
Finding a balance to help me be as productive as possible. Self-managing, which can be stressful sometimes because of other priorities and things that happen in life. But it’s a challenge I embrace and do not take for granted. Also, trying to take constructive criticism and to make it work musically.
What’s your next big gig coming up? When/Where?
Well, I am excited to announce that I have been invited to perform at the 67th Australian Jazz Convention in Forbes, New South Wales at the end of this year. I am very excited because this will be my first trip to Australia.
