Long considered to be one of the forerunners of the “newgrass” revolution in America, the savvy veterans of Rollin' In The Hay have been thrilling fans coast to coast for years. Opening for everyone from Greg Allman, Moe, Charlie Daniels, The Doobie Brothers, Jerry Douglas, Alabama, to Widespread Panic, the unique sound of the Hay keeps fans coming back for more. We recently caught up with vocalist/guitarist Rick Carter on his favorite gigs, how social media has changed for him, and where you can see the Hay next.
What do you hope listeners will get from your music?
When a crowd leaves a Rollin’ In The Hay show we strive to have smiles on their faces, a melody in their heart and saying, "I can't pick out my favorite song because I love them all!”
What’s the best gig you ever played?
Toss up between opening for Gregg Allman or Widespread Panic.
How has social media affected the way you market/promote your music?
Social media 1987 = 5 hours spent printing flyers and stapling them to telephone poles promoting shows. Social media 2012 - takes 1 second to instantly hit thousands!
What’s a creative way that you interact with your fans? Live? Online?
We involve the audience at a live show with the honesty we feel and play in our music. Online we involve them directly because they are part of our family.
What’s your next big gig coming up? When/Where?
Bonnaroo is our next big gig.
