We want our artists to have the best opportunities to boost their career and give them the chance to do things they may not be able to on their own. That’s why for the past few years, we’ve partnered with Planetary Group to bring you to new heights with the opportunity to tour places like China, India and Scandinavia. Now, they’re doing it again and giving you the chance to tour Singapore in 2011! We recently chatted with the winner of 2010’s Tour of China, Olafur Arnalds, about his trip and tips he has for artists hoping to embark on new adventures.
Why did you submit to this opportunity?
I had a feeling that Asia would be a good market for me, but it's always so hard to get over there without financial support - especially the first time. But to be honest I didn’t really apply very seriously, it was more of a 'why not?' decision. I had actually forgotten about it when they got in touch saying they had chosen me!
What did you do to prepare once you found out you got the slot?
Sonicbids, Planetary and Split Works did such an amazing job there was actually not that much for me to do. I started trying to reach out to fans over there but they were much better at it than I was, so they did most of it. I just started reading up on my Chinese history and getting excited!
Tell us a bit more about your experience.
Playing in Asia is really something else. You cant go there expecting every show will be perfect, but the fans will love it nevertheless. I went straight to #1 on Douban (the Chinese Myspace) and we actually had a lot of people coming out and lots of press. The fans are very enthusiastic and treat you like a superstar - which can be a bit weird but also fun. Playing there makes you feel like you've been able to bring something new that had an effect on a totally different culture. That’s a great feeling.
Would you do it again?
Oh yes. And I already have. Split Works were so happy with the tour that they took me on as a permanent artist and we did my second tour of Asia just six months after the first one. I'm back to #1 on Douban now and have quite a large, devoted fan base over there. It's not a question in my mind who I have got to thank for all that!
What advice can you give to artists submitting to opportunities like this one?
Do research on the place you are going to, really know what you are applying for and realize that it's not necessarily the same kind of music that gets popular over there as in America or Europe. And don't forget, if you indeed are chosen to go on this tour, respect the country's culture and customs, even if you don't agree with them.
