The Differences Between Being in a Band as a Teenager vs. as an Adult

Find me on:

Being in a band in high school is way different than being in one as an adult... sometimes. Whether you started a cover band in your parents' garage or counted on your mom for rides to practice, these are the few and fleeting moments you may (or may not) miss as a grownup.

When you're a teenager: the prom gig is gold

You guys probably thought you'd be the next ZZ Top, too.

When you're an adult: the wedding gig is gold

Bills = PAID.

When you're a teenager: you get to shows in your mom's minivan

Riding in style (i.e., with a working AC).

When you're an adult: you get to shows in your crappy tour van

Better take auto shop class before you graduate!

When you're a teenager: your mom is your number-one fan

Granted, the Biebz probably had a slightly different high school band experience than you did.

When you're an adult: your mom is still your number-one fan

Better keep her as your plus one!

When you're a teenager: no gigs on school nights

That's why you gotta pick the slackers for your band, man!

When you're an adult: no gigs on work nights (you hope)

Homework and school nights seem easy after trying to balance a band with a job and a family.

When you're a teenager: you do your homework on the way to shows

You might actually graduate!

When you're an adult: you take care of band business on the way to shows

You might actually eat next week! See: 9 Smart Uses of Your Time When You're Stuck in a Tour Van

When you're a teenager: you're the best band in town

You all know you're the coolest kids on the block.

When you're an adult: maybe not so much...

Let's face it... growing up can be a bummer!

Being an adult doesn't have to suck! Get yourself a solid music career strategy and maybe, one day, you'll have a tour vehicle with AC again.
